Our group will be implementing a NextGen platform to build a private cloud through OpenStack to make these services available to our research staff. We are looking for an experienced Cloud Engineer to be a key partner in building this environment and mentor our staff on the new technologies.
In this role, as a member of the Research Computing team in the CELS Systems group, you can expect to:
- Research, develop, integrate, and administer next-generation platforms, including OpenStack, Ceph, Kubernetes, and public cloud resources in Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
- Participate in the technical operation and support of CELS computing infrastructure and high-performance computing (HPC) facilities to enhance the productivity of scientific, administrative, and research colleagues.
- Experience opportunities to learn from industry leaders, gain exposure to cutting-edge technologies, and grow your expertise in managing hybrid computing environments and advanced infrastructure solutions.
- Aid in cultivating a customer-centric culture by leveraging customer feedback to drive continuous improvement and innovation.
- Collaborate with colleagues and customers using Agile Scrum for project management and ITIL for IT service and operations management.
- Lead infrastructure design initiatives for scalable, reliable, and secure systems while ensuring comprehensive design solutions align with business and technical requirements.
This position requires a hybrid schedule, blending on-site and remote work; on-site presence will be required at the Argonne campus in Lemont, Illinois 3+ days each week.
Position Requirements
- Proficiency in Linux systems administration and scripting (e.g., Python).
- Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform in private and public clouds (AWS, GCP).
- Skilled in Ansible for configuration management, including developing roles, modules, and templating with YAML, JSON, and Jinja2.
- Experience with developing CI/CD workflows for automating deployments in both IaC and software development contexts.
- Expertise in containerization (Kubernetes and/or Docker) and virtualization technologies (OpenStack and/or VMware).
- Familiarity with debugging tools (e.g., strace) and performance tuning in HPC environments.
- Ability to specify, design, and implement hardware components/systems.
- Ability to understand the architecture of high-performance computing (HPC) systems, with the ability to design, engineer, manage, and troubleshoot these environments.
- Provision, configure, and ensure database reliability and automate routine administration tasks and monitor database load, performance, and security metrics.
- Propose and implement secure configuration practices for Configuration Items (CIs).
- Develop tools (including automation) for CI tracking and management, ensuring accuracy and completeness and report on configuration status and recommend corrective actions as needed.
- Develop and document solution architectures, evaluating trade-offs in cost, performance, and scalability and align solutions with enterprise and solution architecture standards, ensuring security compliance.
- Investigate and resolve system and service problems, identifying preventative measures and support problem management by analyzing patterns and trends to refine processes.
- Define and manage medium-scale projects, ensuring alignment with governance and business priorities while monitoring project metrics, ensuring deliverables meet agreed standards, budgets, and timelines.
- Monitor multi-channel service delivery, analyzing performance metrics to identify trends to enhance customer experiences by recommending and implementing process improvements.
- Demonstrated ability to model Argonne's core values: impact, safety, respect, teamwork, and integrity.

This position can be hired at one of two levels (PT3 or PT4), and the minimum requirements for each are as follows:
- PT3: Bachelor's degree and 4+ years of experience, or a Master's degree and 2+ years of experience, or equivalent
- PT4: Bachelor's degree and 6+ years of experience, or a Master's degree and 4+ years of experience, or equivalent
