Overview of the Platform Engineer

The Platform Engineer will be responsible for building and maintaining our cloud infrastructure, including the tools used for deployment, operation, monitoring/alerting, and troubleshooting of infrastructure and related services.  The role is heavily focused on AWS and as such we expect a strong working knowledge of common AWS services, infrastructure components, and networking concepts. The Platform Engineer will be a member of a small team and while the focus will be Platform Engineering / SRE tasks, they will be asked to participate in other operational & project-based work and will be required to assist with a wide variety of technologies as needed. 

This position is a hybrid position based out of our Cary, NC office and requires being in the office at least 3 days per week. Participation in the on-call rotation is required, and evening/weekend work may be required occasionally. 

 Duties and Responsibilities of the Platform Engineer

  • Leverage native AWS services and custom tooling to design scalable, resilient, infrastructure.
  • Build & deploy infrastructure as code using Terraform and Python.
  • Manage CI/CD using GitLab. 
  • Modernize existing cloud infrastructure by utilizing containers and serverless technology.
  • Assist with problem investigation and resolution, with a focus on root cause.
  • Design highly available infrastructure with a focus on proactive monitoring and preventative maintenance. 
  • Participate in on-call rotation for critical infrastructure.

Skills and Experience of the Platform Engineer

  • At least one programming/scripting language, such as Python, as well as source control using Git.
  • 3+ years working experience with AWS cloud technologies.
  • Fundamental understanding of networking technologies and protocols.
  • Problem-solving abilities, including experience with log parsing and debug tools.
  • Experience building/maintaining highly available, scalable, systems.
  • Firm grasp of security basics, including Security Groups, encryption, authentication & authorization.
  • Ability to create detailed, accurate, and maintainable documentation and diagrams.
