We're seeking a Senior DevOps Engineer with deep expertise in AWS cloud infrastructure, exceptional TypeScript programming capabilities, and strong systems design thinking to join our SmartHome+ Platform Engineering team. In this role, you'll architect, build, and maintain scalable, reliable, and secure infrastructure that powers TELUS SmartHome+'s connected devices, mobile applications, and professional monitoring services serving hundreds of thousands of Canadian homes.

Responsibilities

  • Cloud Infrastructure & AWS Expertise

  • Design, implement, and manage robust AWS cloud infrastructure for SmartHome+ services using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles

  • Architect multi-region, highly available systems leveraging AWS services (ECS, EKS, Lambda, S3, DynamoDB, IoT Core, Kinesis etc)

  • Optimize cloud costs while maintaining the performance, security, and reliability standards required for home security and monitoring services

  • Implement and maintain container orchestration platforms (ECS, EKS, Kubernetes) for SmartHome+ microservices

  • Design and manage CI/CD pipelines for automated deployment and testing of SmartHome+ applications and infrastructure

    Programming & Automation

  • Develop automation scripts, tools, and frameworks primarily using TypeScript and Node.js

  • Build custom tooling to improve developer productivity and operational efficiency across the SmartHome+ engineering teams

  • Write clean, maintainable, and standardized TypeScript code for infrastructure components (AWS CDK constructs)

  • Implement infrastructure testing frameworks and validation tools using TypeScript testing libraries

    Systems Design & Architecture

  • Architect solutions for SmartHome+ infrastructure that balance technical debt, time-to-market, and long-term maintainability

  • Lead technical design reviews and provide guidance on system architecture decisions for connected home devices and monitoring platforms

  • Design observability and monitoring strategies across distributed IoT and cloud systems

  • Implement disaster recovery, backup, and business continuity solutions for critical home security services

    Collaboration & Leadership

  • Mentor junior engineers and promote DevOps best practices across SmartHome+ engineering teams

  • Collaborate with development, testing, device engineering, product teams to streamline workflows for smart home product delivery

  • Participate in on-call rotations and incident response for SmartHome+ services, driving root cause analysis

  • Contribute to technical roadmaps and strategic planning for SmartHome+ platform evolution

  • Drive adoption of DevOps culture and practices across the SmartHome+ organization

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, or Platform Engineering roles

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience architecting and managing AWS infrastructure at scale

  • Proven track record of designing and implementing large-scale distributed systems, preferably in IoT, connected devices, or consumer technology

  • Experience in a high-growth technology environment or enterprise-scale organization

    Technical Skills

    AWS Expertise:

  • Deep knowledge of AWS core services, multi-account environments, and well-architected framework

  • Experience with AWS networking (VPC, Load Balancers, etc)

  • Strong understanding of AWS security best practices (IAM, KMS, Secrets Manager, Security Groups)

  • Hands-on experience with containerization (EKS/ECS, Kubernetes, Docker)

  • Experience with AWS IoT services (IoT Core, IoT Greengrass, Device Management) preferred

  • AWS certifications preferred

TypeScript & Programming:

  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript and Node.js for building infrastructure tools, automation

  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools, preferably AWS CDK (TypeScript), CloudFormation

  • Strong scripting skills (Bash, Python)

Systems Design

  • Deep understanding of distributed systems principles and patterns

  • Experience with microservices architecture and service mesh technologies

  • Knowledge of database systems (relational and NoSQL) and data storage strategies for high-volume event data

  • Understanding of caching strategies, Redis, CDN implementation, and real-time data processing

  • Experience with event-driven architectures and message queuing systems (SQS, SNS, EventBridge)

DevOps & Tooling

  • Expert-level experience with CI/CD tools (AWS CodePipeline, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI)

  • Strong understanding of version control strategies

  • Experience with monitoring and observability tools (CloudWatch (preferred), Datadog, Grafana)

  • Familiarity with log aggregation and analysis tools (CloudWatch Logs)

  • Expert-level knowledge of operating AWS ECS and AWS EKS workloads

Soft Skills

  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders

  • Self-motivated with a continuous learning mindset

  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments

Bonus Points

  • Experience with IoT device management and fleet operations at scale

  • Experience with chaos engineering principles and tools

  • Background in telecommunications, home security, or smart home technologies

  • Contributions to open-source projects, particularly in the TypeScript/AWS ecosystem

  • Experience with real-time video streaming infrastructure

  • Knowledge of compliance frameworks relevant to home security (SOC 2, ISO 27001, PCI-DSS, UL certifications)
