Description

Create your best future and join Westpac as a Senior Automation Engineer - Platform Automation.

What’s the role?

We have an opportunity for a Senior Automation Engineer in the Platform Hosting Services team within Enterprise Technology Services. Drawing on your DevOps/SRE experience, you’ll help Westpac run infrastructure at scale. You’ll build self-service automation and connect services across infrastructure domains—helping application teams deliver new features and services at pace, with high reliability and efficiency.

You will join a team of IT automation generalists who combine infrastructure experience with tools and languages such as Terraform, Ansible, Python, PowerShell, and Aria Automation (JavaScript). Together, you’ll tackle challenges across a large on-premises hosting platform, plus some cloud compute services.

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Maintain and extend our self-service VM orchestration and management stack.
  • Identify and deliver new automation opportunities across hardware (compute, storage, and networking), platform, and VM management—from requirements through to build and release.
  • Apply SRE/DevOps practices (CI/CD, SecOps, test-driven development, and more) to the automation we deliver.
  • Provide subject matter expertise on workload lifecycle management, and support incident recovery, problem resolution, and service continuity.
  • Partner with other infrastructure teams to deliver well-integrated automation.
  • Stay current with IT automation trends and assess new technology for operational fit and potential to improve or replace existing offerings.

Please note, Interstate candidates are welcome to apply for this position!

What do I need?

To succeed in this role, you’ll apply software development skills to build and maintain tooling that supports DevOps/SRE practices and enables infrastructure management at scale. We’re keen to meet engineers who frequently ask, “can this be done better?” and bring the following skills and experience:

  • Experience applying DevOps/SRE practices and tooling to deliver automation across one or more hosting platforms. This role primarily operates with on-prem VMware-based infrastructure; experience with other platforms (including public cloud) is also welcome.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming or scripting languages, preferably Python, PowerShell, and/or JavaScript to support infrastructure automation.
  • Hands-on experience with Git, associated workflows, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Hands-on experience with provisioning automation (e.g. Terraform, Aria Automation/Orchestrator, CloudFormation, Azure Resource Manager), configuration management (e.g. Ansible, Chef), and image/template build tools (e.g. Packer).
  • Experience supporting modern application architectures (e.g. microservices) and platforms such as Kubernetes/OpenShift.
  • Understanding of network fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, VLANs/overlays, firewalling, routing) would be desirable.
  • Experience with IBM Power Systems (P-Series) would be beneficial (e.g., AIX, PowerVM/LPARs, VIOS, HMC, NIM and related tooling), particularly when used alongside Ansible-driven automation; training is provided if required.
