Manager, Platform Engineering - Greater Boston Area

 

As the Manager, Platform Engineering, you will work cross-functionally to drive strategy and technical direction. You will own and maintain backend systems while finding ways to make technical improvements to meet the changing business need. In this role, you will lead and mentor a team that focuses on technical capabilities and successful project execution.

 

 

Responsibilities:

 

Strategy:

  • Partner with global product and program teams to define strategy, prioritize initiatives, project execution and align technical capabilities with business needs
  • Drive technical direction by overseeing architecture design, conducting code reviews and managing technical debt

Systems:

  • Own and maintain critical global backend systems including and in-house OAuth 2.0 authentication service, a customer data platform (CDP), loyalty program, large-scale user deletion for GDPR/CCPA compliance and other services
  • Proactively identify and resolve roadblocks ensuring smooth project execution
  • Support incident response and major launches while minimizing user impact

Management:

  • Lead and mentor a team of engineers while fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment
  • Provide growth opportunities and guidance to engineers helping them advance in their careers
  • Plan and allocate resources effectively, including hiring and onboarding new team members to support current and future projects
  • Set goals and development plans for the team members to grow both within the department but also within the organization
  • Conduct weekly 1:1’s, employee coaching and feedback sessions as well as mid-year/annual reviews

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, related field or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 3+ years leading and managing engineering teams, preferably in a distributed environment

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):

  • Strong background in backend or data engineering, ideally with experience in user data and identity
  • 5 years minimum experience with building applications in AWS or other cloud platforms
  • 5 years minimum experience in backend languages such as functional Scala (Cats HTTP4), Python or Java
  • 5 years minimum experience with SQL and relational database management
  • 3 years minimum experience working with GDPR/CCPA compliance, particularly in user data management and deletion
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and incident management skills
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, with experience working with product, project managers and across global teams
  • Ability to balance strategic initiatives with hands-on technical leadership
  • Effective problem solver
