About the Opportunity

Join the AODN as a Cloud Engineer delivering critical cloud-native infrastructure that supports Australia’s national marine science capability. In this role, you will design, build, and optimise secure, scalable, and reliable AWS-based infrastructure that enables the collection, management, and delivery of complex marine and climate data. Working collaboratively with data engineers, software developers, and data scientists, you will develop Infrastructure-as-Code, CI/CD pipelines, and containerised workloads using modern dev-ops practices.

You will play a key role in evolving automated deployment processes, enhancing system performance and security, and ensuring high availability of data services used by the Australian research community and IMOS international collaborators. This is an opportunity to apply your technical expertise to solve complex challenges while contributing to innovative solutions that make a meaningful impact on marine science and environmental protection.

What’s Required

β€’ Extensive experience in Software Engineering or Cloud Engineering (e.g. AWS) methodologies, tools, and practices. This includes experience with version control systems, continuous integration / continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines (GitHub actions), IaC tools (e.g. Terraform) and containerisation (e.g., Docker, Elastic Container Service).

β€’ Demonstrated experience with cloud systems monitoring and observability technology platforms for software development and deployment lifecycles, including the use of application performance monitoring to diagnose complex issues and support reliable, scalable service operation.

β€’ Expert technical skills in system administration, computer networking and scripting using Unix command line, Bash, Python or other scripting language essential for automating processes.

β€’ Proven understanding of cybersecurity principles, best practices, and common security vulnerabilities relevant to cloud-based infrastructure and software delivery.

β€’ Highly developed technical problem-solving skills and analytical thinking with demonstrated ability to take ownership of complex problems, troubleshooting issues and implement effective solutions.

β€’ Well-developed written and verbal communications skills with the ability to explain complex concepts and solutions to the team as well as non-technical stakeholders.

β€’ Proven collaboration skills to work effectively across cross-functional teams and external consultancies, contributing to the delivery of agreed outcomes in a complex organisational environment.

β€’ A commitment to continuous learning especially in the rapidly evolving domain of cloud computing and cyber-security.

Strongly desirable (but not essential) experience includes expertise in Identity and Access Management (IAM) solutions, Scrum Master experience within the Scrum Agile framework, and a proven ability to develop and maintain clear, comprehensive technical documentation. Experience working with GitHub and GitHub Actions to support version control and automation is also advantageous, along with an AWS certification (or equivalent cloud credential).

Qualifications and Licences

β€’ Degree qualifications in Computer Science, Information Technology, or Systems Engineering, combined with significant relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant extensive experience and/or education/training.
