Security Benefit (SB) is seeking an AWS DevOps Engineer III to join the team. The ideal candidate may work remotely but will be required to travel to our home office in Topeka, Kansas periodically. SB associates are working in a hybrid environment with both remote and on-site work.

What Does the Job Look Like?

In this role, you will be responsible for streamlining the development, deployment, and operation of our AWS Infrastructure, ensuring that infrastructure and operations are highly automated, efficient, and scalable. You will play a critical part in managing and enhancing continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, improving system reliability, and driving the adoption of best practices in automation and monitoring. Additionally, this person will be responsible for coordinating, designing, implementing, documenting and testing disaster recovery strategies in AWS to ensure business continuity across the organization’s infrastructure and applications.

  • Manage our AWS cloud environment and ensuring operational excellence using automations
  • Implement and manage automated CI/CD pipelines in Gitlab for infrastructure deployments using IaC
  • Conduct disaster recovery drills and testing DR strategies using AWS services such as EDR, AWS Backup etc., along with documenting DR procedures and best practices for teams to follow during emergencies
  • AWS Infrastructure Automations, conversion and maintenance of AWS infrastructure with terraform pipelines
  • Maintain detailed documentation of infrastructure, automated workflows, and CI/CD processes for continuous knowledge transfer and support

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Infrastructure Automation & Management:
    • Design, implement, and manage infrastructure on AWS using Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) tools like Terraform, CloudFormation, or AWS CDK.
    • Automate provisioning, configuration, monitoring, and scaling of environments to ensure optimal performance.
    • Develop scripts and automation tools for repetitive tasks and workflows using languages like Python, Bash, or Ruby.
  1. CI/CD Pipeline Development:
    • Lead the creation and management of CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Jenkins, GitLab, AWS Code Pipeline or other similar platforms.
    • Ensure fast, reliable deployment processes with automated testing, deployment, and rollback strategies.
    • Building and maintaining Custom AMI’s, Container Images with the intent to apply shift left security strategies.
    • Promote best practices in source control (Git) and branch/merge strategies.
  1. Cloud Infrastructure Management:
    • Oversee the architecture, provisioning, and configuration of AWS services like EC2, Lambda, ECS, S3, RDS, DynamoDB, EKS, Fargate, ECS etc.
    • Ensure cost-effective use of AWS resources and help with budget optimization.
    • Implement high-availability and disaster recovery strategies, ensuring the reliability and uptime of services.
  1. Monitoring & Performance Optimization:
    • Set up centralized logging and monitoring solutions using tools like AWS CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, or New Relic.
    • Identify performance bottlenecks and design solutions to improve system speed, efficiency, and reliability.
    • Implement proactive alerts for system failures and anomalies.
  1. Security & Compliance:
    • Ensure security best practices for cloud infrastructure, including proper access controls, data encryption, and identity management (AWS IAM).
    • Monitor security vulnerabilities and ensure systems comply with necessary standards (e.g., PCI, SOC2, HIPAA).
    • Automate patch management and vulnerability scans.
  1. Collaboration & Leadership:
    • Work closely with software development teams to help define deployment processes and application scaling requirements.
    • Mentor junior engineers on best practices for DevOps and AWS-specific technologies.
    • Act as a point of contact for operational concerns and collaborate with teams to resolve production issues quickly.

Who Are You?

  • 6+ years of experience in DevOps or Cloud Engineering in AWS, at least 2+ years of experience in performing Disaster Recovery exercises using AWS EDR or other similar technologies.
  • AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Associate/Professional or similar advanced certifications can be a plus.
  • Bachelors degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field is required
  • In-depth knowledge of backup solutions on AWS, including EC2, AWS Backup, S3, EBS snapshots, Amazon RDS backup, and glacier for long-term storage and disaster recovery purposes
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, including the ability to independently lead DR-related projects and coordinate resources effectively
  • Cloud Computing: Extensive experience working with AWS services (EC2, S3, Lambda, VPC, IAM, CloudFormation, RDS, EKS, etc.).
  • Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC): Proficiency in Terraform, CloudFormation, SAM, Ansible, Packer, Chef, Puppet or similar tools for automating infrastructure provisioning.
  • CI/CD Tools: Strong knowledge of Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD or AWS Code Pipeline for building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.
  • Scripting & Automation: Proficiency in scripting languages like Python, PowerShell via AWS SSM for automating processes.
  • Containerization & Orchestration: Experience with Docker and Kubernetes (EKS) to manage containerized applications.
  • Monitoring & Logging: Familiarity with monitoring tools like AWS CloudWatch, CloudTrail, Prometheus, Grafana, Dynatrace or Datadog for performance and reliability.
  • Security & Compliance: Knowledge of AWS security best practices, IAM roles, security groups, encryption, and vulnerability scanning. Provide support for audit using Gitlab Compliance module or similar tools to automate audit reporting.
  • Version Control Systems: Proficient in Git for source code versioning.
